So every team has a leader, and that leader usually leads by example and usually wears a "C" on his sweater.
Every player that wears that C is a great player in their own aspect but some are better than others with their abilities and this is a personal blog on which captains are the best in the NHL at this moment.
I am typing this because there was an announcement that the Montreal Canadians are not going to have an assigned captain on the roster this year. They are going to go with four "A's" instead. Another team that has looked at that option this year are the Ottawa Senators (reportedly). So it got me thinking, which leaders are a stand out for me when you think about the captaincy?
Some people look at wearing the C as a popularity contest while others look at is as the best team leader is leading the team.
I'm of the second notion where I think the team usually gives the best leader the C and then surrounds them with the assistant captains who are just as capable of wearing the C.
Being a few weeks before the season starts, not all teams have their Captains and Assistant Captains up on their roster pages of their websites. But that doesn't meant that there isn't someone tabbed for the job.
There are lots of great captains in the NHL and some I don't know a whole lot about but have heard their names a lot over the years.
My top choices can be swapped any which way because I think they are all very good at their jobs and are great leaders.
So lets start from the top.
1. Sidney Crosby. 2. Jonathan Toews. 3. Jonathan Tavares. 4 Shane Doan. 5. Ryan Getzlaf. 6. Dustin Brown. 7. Henrik Zetterberg. 8. Zdeno Chara. 9. Steven Stamkos. 10. Andrew Ladd
Those are my top 10 and even then I still think I would change a few names around and maybe even remove a few for some others. Looking at that list right there, there is no way you can say any of them are bad leaders and shouldn't be a captain of a team. Some of them are on better teams than others but that doesn't mean they are bad at what they do. Some have won Stanley Cups and others are still searching for their first chance to lift that mighty cup above their heads.
I think that the top 3 can be interchanged in anyway possible. They are all great leaders and 2 of them have won a cup or two already. They all lead by example and are passionate about what they do. They have great skill and the ability to bring a team from the bottom up to the top just by them putting the sweater over their head and hitting the ice.
If you think back to when those players were drafted, their respected teams were pretty much at the bottom of the league and looking for a kick start. Now look at them, perennial leaders in divisions or conferences, and making waves every season. The only exception is Tavares, who is on a team that is lacking some of the talent other teams have. Yet think back to the end of last season, and you will remember that the Islanders were very close to making the playoffs. So with a little better management and some more skilled players, (a goalie!) and they could make the playoffs frequently.
But as much as I like Crosby and think he is probably the best (when not injured) player in the NHL, I personally like Jonathan Toews as a better captain. I think that he has the grit, determination, lead by example attitude that a leader in this league needs. He can be put out on the ice in any situation and get the job done regardless of who he is out there against. He plays hard at both ends of the ice and can put points on the board. He has the nickname of "Captain Serious" but I would believe that he takes his job and his role on this team very seriously, thus the lack of a smile on his face when on the ice.
Well those are the players who I think are some of the NHL's best leaders and players that are wearing the "C" on their sweaters.
I'm looking forward to seeing who is named a team captain on some teams this season and watching how everyone plays this year. Lets get this season started!
